Self Destructive Baby

© Brodiss 2002
She's my self-destructive baby
She's my self-destructive girl
And every time I see her
My soul spins in a whirl

I know she never loved me
I know she does not care
I know that our brief friendship
Was neither here nor there

She thinks she's not important –
Though she never paused to see
That her life was awesome
To one meaningless as me

She's begun her self-destruction
And there's nothing I can say
To stem the flood of horror
Now that I have gone away

I watch her in her anger
I mourn for all her rage
I only wish I had the key
To free her from her cage

Oppressive rules do crush her
As she claws at all the walls
They watch her in her anguish
As her life fate mauls

In quiet desperation I see her fade
And there's nothing I can say
To halt this tide of destruction
Or hold her death at bay

I wish she'd choose to stay here
With all of us who care
But I fear it is too late
And no more she'll bear

So I watch her death creep quietly –
A shadow in the long night –
And I see her slowly still
As she gives up her endless fight

She's my self-destructive baby
She's my self-destructive one –
Words cutting deeper than razors
When all is said and done.
