No Consequence At All

I am of no consequence at all
Watching them laugh
together
In the dying hours of the afternoon
Conversation flowing and falling
With humors of the moment -
I watch from another reality,
My own little corner of self-deception
Fading in and out of the moment
If only
If only
They wanted me to be
But
I am of no consequence at all
A soul-eating appetite
feeds the hunger
To be needed
To be wanted
But I am redundant -
No indispensable element of their reality am I
It does not matter if I live or die
They would not miss me
Or recall me -
Not even as a vague memory
Of a brief conversation in passing
I am of no consequence at all
Such stark truth stares
in my face -
I am of no consequence at all
Ugly in its honesty
This fact erodes my hope -
What use desire
When rejection is complete?
Why do I bother to continue?
I am of no consequence
at all
No one will notice
