Heavy falls the dust-laden
dusk
Absorbing the furious red
Of an unforgiving sun
Darkness swallows the land
Obliterating all
But the small sphere of reality
Defined by the headlights
White lines stretching
to infinity
Defining the path that must be taken
Ever onwards
Solitary in the night
White and red reflectors
guard the roadside
Marking the uncrossable line
Between the real and the possible
Ghostly gums loom out of shadows -
Childhood monsters in disguise
Waiting for the opportunity to lunge
And claim a white cross of their own
Sound fills the car
Increasing the alienation within
Or is it some form of protection
Against the horrors of the night?
But still the thoughts
come unbidden
Reflections that require no mirror
In order to exist
Sometimes you can
be cruel
I don't know why
You crucified me
Before I even knew I'd sinned
Nailing me to a cross of my own
Stretched out against a starry sky
A bleeding testament to your expectations
Of someone I could never be
I would tell you that
I love you
If I thought you cared for me
But you don't
You just want some idealistic puppet
Something I can never be
Sometimes I wish I
could turn you around
So you could see what I see
So you could hear
The lonely voice
Screaming shrilly inside my head
Do you think you would be strong enough?
