I Never Look In Mirrors

© 2003 by Brodiss

I never look in mirrors
For they are nothing more
Than reflections
Of what other people see

Artificial artifices
Showing other people's constructions
Of what should and shouldn't be
As defined by
Their own particular reality

Razor images
Cutting through my mind -
The mirror reflecting
Pseudo-truths and distorted beliefs
Born of some half-remembered dream

Crystal shards grinding underfoot
Each burning sliver
Tearing at my heart
My soul
Leaving all my hopes shattered

I never look in mirrors
I know it would be no use
For, even in the deepest reflection,
I wouldn't be able to see me.
