The poem which starts
below began as a surrealistic dream. I thought it would make a good story
but, the more I thought about it, the more I came to believe that this tale
would be better told in verse.
So I started to write it as a poem, little realising that, as stanza after
stanza rolled out of my mind, it was going to grow into a very long poem indeed.
But it did, so I've split it up over several pages so that it doesn't become
a scrolling nightmare. I am content for it to be a nightmare of a gothic kind.
I fell in love with another man's
wife
Even though I knew it could cause me strife.
I knew it was a most dangerous move
But one can't dictate the course of love.
I fell in love with another man's wife
Long ago - in another man's life.
She walked in elegance and in grace,
The sun shone no brighter than her face.
As she walked on rolling hills of green,
A more beauteous sight never to be seen,
The flowers did swoon as she passed by
And love-struck birds fell from the sky.
I watched her walk upon the earth
And in my heart love did find berth,
For the wonder of one such as she
Did truly overawe one such as me.
I prayed to the great God of the Vast
That over me, her eye she would cast.
And look she did, with shining
eye,
Which brought such joy, I thought I'd die
For one who was so beautiful as she
Should deign to notice one such as me.
I thought my heart should stop right then
So I could go directly to my heaven.
